Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie is all about George (Kevin Hart) and Harold (Thomas Middleditch), best friends and classmates in fourth grade.
They hang out in a treehouse and draw comic books together, creating a particularly silly superhero they call Captain Underpants. One day, through the usual magic, the boys hypnotize Mr. Krupp (Ed Helms), their miserable school principal, into believing he is Captain Underpants. Unable to leap tall buildings and a lot slower than a locomotive, Captain Underpants has no superpowers at all, but he’s the only one who doesn’t know it.
His ridiculous attempts at being a superhero (in only a cape and tighty- whities) create havoc — and laughter. Principal Krupp has a beef with George and Harold because they are well- known pranksters at school. His evil ambition is to put the boys in separate classrooms. But the real villain of the piece is Professor Poopypants (Nick Kroll), a science teacher who wants to ban laughter from the world.
Everyone has to work together to fight off that threat. Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie was written by Nicholas Stoller, who includes funny stuff that will appeal to kids — the name Professor Poopypants likely makes it unnecessary to explain further — as well as humour aimed at adults.
The movie isn’t faultless. It veers into ‘Important Message’ territory at times, and eventually works itself into a frantic storytelling lather. But those are minor points.
Overall, this one is delightfully rude and silly and hints at insurrection, somewhat akin in spirit to Deadpool. Never too soon to show the kids a bit of anarchy.
